How is the cost of living for a student in Ireland?
Fortunately the cost of living in Ireland has gone down since I first arrived here in 2006. Most importantly, rent prices have reduced and it is a lot easier now to bargain with landlords and agencies than in the past.Like most countries, capital cities tend to be the most expensive and this is also true for Dublin. On the other hand... There is also more to do in bigger cities and if you're young...then you will probably prefer to live where the action is!!
The expense of being a student in Dublin varies depending on where you stay, how much you go out
and...
if you plan to travel around Europe while you are working or studying in Ireland.... Everybody is different, so it's impossible to give an exact figure.
Some spending may be harder to control than other things though, like your rent for example will be a set amount every month, as will your transport expenses. However, you can save money when it comes to things like food, clothes and even mobile phone costs. There is a good variety of supermarkets in Ireland now, and if you really want to save money you can try... Aldi or Lidl. These supermarkets are cheaper, but the quality of goods is obviously not as high as the more expensive supermarkets. Good "in-between" supermarkets are Dunnes and Tesco, where prices can also be competitive. When it comes to clothes, you can also find very good value in Dunnes and a similar store called Penneys. When I arrived from Brazil I brought a LOT of clothes and shoes because I knew I would have to be ready for winter here. I thought clothes were cheaper in Brazil, but... I really could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I knew about shops to buy cheap clothes and shoes in Ireland. If you're planning to save money with your mobile phone charges in Ireland, you can

to view this topic. There are lots of options when it comes to buying a mobile phone in Ireland and you can choose a pre paid or a paid monthly. And don't forget that you can also use Skype! One of the most important things to help you here is of course your Student Card. You can apply for this card in Day 1 of your course and will give you lots of useful discounts!
