Health Insurance for students in Ireland

Health insurance is listed as one of the student visa requirements when coming to live in Ireland, but I did not show my health insurance to the imigration in my arrival.

I have also met many students who say the same thing.

Of course it is your choice, but I advise you to buy some just to feel safe.

Many schools now provide this insurance for their students so you may apply through your school.

You may also use your own health insurance from your home country, provided it is recognised in Ireland.

Lastly, you can purchase insurance with a company in Ireland, the most well known here is VHI.

If you are unlucky enough to need medical services in Ireland, then you need to be aware that...

The cost of hospitals can be very expensive!

If you are an EU citizen, you are entitled to medical services in Ireland provided you have supporting documentation.

Unfortunately, there is always chance that you will have to see a doctor during your time here.

If so, then you will pay about 50 Euro for a consultation with a doctor here.

Pharmacies are generally open 6 or 7 days per week in Ireland. They usually open from 9am to 6pm, but you can also find a few that are open until late.

If you need emergency assistance, the number for all emergencies, including the Guards (Police) and Fire Brigade, is 999.
